CHAPTER 16 CEDAR

Recess sucks.

I mean, I loved it, like, a week ago, but now it’s the worst. It’s the last recess of the day, so it’s only fifteen minutes… but it feels like fifteen hours. I don’t have a phone. First and foremost, recess is phone time. It’s when I catch up and film any content that needs extras.

Now I just shoot the ball around with the guys, and even that sucks, because Mo and I are still weird. We played bump during lunch recess, and he bumped my ball into the parking lot. The next round I bumped his ball over the kindergarten-area fence, and he had to go inside the school and through their classroom to get it. It’s the most dreaded of all bumps… usually reserved for your worst enemies.

Things are getting serious.

Actually, all the guys are acting strange. Carl went bright red when I saw him this morning—he must have been dreading Monday and my first real chance to tell everyone—but I kept my word. And Corrado, Andrew, and Jerome are giving me dirty looks, like, Can you just admit your brother stole the coach’s ring so we can stop running ten thousand wind sprints during practice?

The practices on Thursday and Friday last week were brutal. Coach was moody and every missed shot was another excuse to run us ragged. At one point even Brooks was like, “Is it too late to retire?” And that guy loves basketball.

We have another practice tonight, and Coach looked even more sour when I passed him in the hallway this morning. It’s going to be a doozy.

I know the guys were talking about Green when I came out, because Brooks is really bad at gossiping. He flushed when I walked over and said, “So, pretty cloudy out today, huh?”

We’re thirteen. We don’t talk about the weather.

I look around. Most of the guys are on their phones, happily scrolling away. Mo is talking to Corrado while he goes through his TikTok feed. And here I am listening to Brooks go over ideas for a new zone defense.

“Have you talked to Coach about this?” I cut in.

Brooks nods eagerly. “Absolutely! But he said he wasn’t in the mood to talk about it. He told me to talk to the guys. He said you specifically.”

“Of course he did,” I mutter, eyeing Mo’s phone.

I am itching to ask someone to use their phone to check my social media profiles, but it’s a dangerous move. If my password gets saved onto their phone or I don’t sign out correctly I am at their mercy for the rest of my life. Or at least until I can change my password again.

Even so… Brooks has a phone. And he’s pretty harmless.

I chuck up a shot, figuring I’ll ask him, but the ball hits the rim at a strange angle and bounces off toward the street. Just my luck. Sighing, I jog after it. We’re not technically allowed to go anywhere near the street, but I can’t just abandon my ball.
